Experian: Average Monthly Debt Payments Fall to Three Year Low

Costa Mesa, CA/November 11, 2010: A recent consumer debt study by Experian found that, nationally, consumers are paying 2% less in average monthly payment now than three years ago.  When considering a combination of credit cards, auto loans and leases, and mortgages and other installment debt, the average is now $903 per month.

“The trend we’re seeing is that consumers have lower payments, indicating both proactive deleveraging by consumers and tighter limits from lenders and certainly consumers are making fewer major purchases such as homes and cars than they were a few years ago,” said Michele Raneri, senior director of analytics, Experian.

The Experian study also found that Washington D.C., Seattle and Baltimore top the list with the highest average monthly payments.  The cities with the lowest payments include Cleveland, Tampa and Pittsburgh.
